He Had A Dream

Gaolekwe, according to his Bio, is an artist gifted with a combination of powerful vocals, trained strong composition skills, a brilliant and creative imagination, and a sound engineering graduate.

After listening to his EP, Had A Dream, six times, I could not argue with how the bio described him and his art. The music was soothing yet confident and gave a feeling of self-belief with a hint of humility. A beautiful contrast.

The EP started with a track titled Sunshine. A little cheesy for an opener, but the song was delivered exceptionally well. Speaking about an unnamed female, Gaolekwe describes his love for her as a car speeding down the highway. Full of challenges, full of tragedy, full of darkness, but then... Full of sunlight. Full of sunshine. One lyric that captured me, "She said, 'Ready or not, here it comes. Brace yourself the joy ride begins'", seemed ambiguous. Gao's vocals came across as dark and suspicious, while his lyrics were pleasant and peaceful. I think it was intentional. Maybe I'm giving him too much credit and reaching, but it came out beautifully. She closed the song by taking his hand. An amazing twist. Sunshine 7/10

The second track is my personal favorite. Life. Not only is the title relevant, but the words are also powerful. The vocals are crisp, clean, and really refreshing to hear. This is the song Gao introduced us to his relationship with the EPs mystery girl. The comparison between how life and relationships are never certain is what makes him an exceptional writer. Recognizing that a relationship is nothing without life and that life is meaningless without relationships is then what makes this song special. Life 9/10

Until The End gives us an old-school boom-bap feel. If you have ever listened to 90s music, you'd appreciate this jam. Giving off a mature style, Gaolekwe goes into explaining that giving up was never an option and that a fight only ends when it ends (Not for the weak). And in the end, while we are still here, we are obliged to fight until the end... I know right, it doesn't "end". However, it is an amazing piece of poetry, mixed with song, that should ideally get your Sunday morning hyped up. Until The End 7/10.
