Black is a colour most people see as evil and is closely associated with death. But more and more people are embracing black in their sense of fashion, from a Wesley Snipes inspired winter trench coat to a David Tlale B.E.T all-black suit.
Black inspires confidence, which leads to others perceiving you as more trustworthy and capable. Most fashion blogs associate it with intelligence and sexiness. In a survey we administered, 60% of women said they preferred black over other colours.
A lot of South African women believe that black makes them look slimmer and more sophisticated than the average women. Another study said that women prefer to wear black because they are trying to be "more than what they appear". They want to divert attention from how they look onto what they do, or who they are.
"Black is the colour to wear when you are trying to impress or reassure", one lady said.
Back in late 2020, my Facebook newsfeed was bombarded with the hashtag #Black_ke_colour_ya_ma_nyora. Which when loosely translated means that black is a colour for the greats. In one blog post by the Huffingtonpost.com, they asked what colour do guys find most attractive. It turns out, through multiple studies that used different methods and situations, red was the colour that appealed most to men when a woman was wearing it. So? Is black colour ya manyora?
